ÖAMTC and police: free lamp change for more traffic safety

In the dark winter months, the risk from traffic accidents increases significantly, especially if the vehicle lighting does not work properly. In order to illuminate this fact and become preventive at the same time, the Austrian automotive, motorcycle and touring club (ÖAMTC) and the local police in Ried have launched a special initiative. The two institutions have replaced defective vehicle lamps free of charge to increase traffic safety.

"A functioning lighting is crucial to both to improve the view and so that other road users can correctly recognize the vehicle," said Robert Schmidsberger, head of the ÖAMTC base in Ried. Missing headlights or taillights can lead to dangerous situations, which is why the initiative is of great importance.

The police stopped vehicles that were on the road with poor lighting. Instead of a ticket, drivers were able to look forward to immediate help: the ÖAMTC technicians exchanged the defective lamps directly on the vehicle. In this framework, ten vehicles were provided with new lamps in the city of Ried, and in the entire state of Upper Austria there were a total of 140 vehicles that benefited from this campaign. If an immediate repair was not possible, the affected vouchers received in order to be able to carry out the exchange later at an ÖAMTC base.

District Police Commandant Deputy Thomas Hasenleitner underlined the importance of this campaign. "We want to raise awareness of the importance of vehicle lighting in the dark season," he said. He emphasized that visibility in road traffic is particularly crucial in fog or darkness to avoid accidents. "If we were able to prevent a single dangerous incident with this campaign, it was already a success," continued Hasenleitner.

This initiative shows that preventive measures and cooperation between institutions such as the ÖAMTC and the police can make a real difference in road traffic. The campaign is not only seen as a way to help drivers, but also promotes security awareness in the total population. More information about this initiative are at www.meinbezirk.at available.
