50 years of town twinning: Ried and Landshut celebrate their connection
The 50th anniversary of the city twinning between Ried and Landshut was recently celebrated in a festive atmosphere, in the city of Landshut. The celebrations began with an enchanting concert of the Stadtkapelle Ried. The opening of an art exhibition, which presented works by Rieder and Landshut painters, sculptors and photographers in the town hall of Landshut, was particularly impressive. City tours and a festive evening in the Bernlochner halls also ensured that the guests and hosts came even closer.
The two mayors, Alexander Putz from Landshut and Bernhard Zwielehner from Ried, emphasized the importance of the town twinning in their speeches. They emphasized that this not only serves the cultural exchange, but also an important link for understanding and peace and the defense of democracy.
A look into the past of the partnership
The official partnership was launched on October 5, 1974 in the Rieder Rathaus by signing the partnership certificate by Mayor Franz Fruhstorfer and Mayor Josef Deimer. Since then, numerous activities and events have developed that strengthen this connection.
In the past five decades, joint festivals and information have been held at the stand. A special highlight was a football game between two prominent teams, the "Deimlinger Kickers" and the "Rieder Rathausbombers". The participation in the Landshut Europeanest and the construction of the European garden are also great milestones in cooperation.
Another important aspect of the partnership is the upcoming commitment of the Rieder citizens in the traditional “Landshut Fürsten wedding”, which is considered the largest historical festival in Europe. In addition, many individuals and groups have used the opportunity to visit the other city. An example of the friendly relationship is the material support of a Rieder child and youth center.
At the end of the 1970s, the Landshut city youth worker Christoph Krenzel began to intensify relationships between youth groups from both cities. This led to the founding of the Landshut-Ried partnership association in 1990. In Ried, Robert Freund was active for 40 years as chairman of the working group for the partnership before Josef Spitzer took this responsibility in 2022.
Another visible sign of the connection took place in Landshut in 1993 when the "Rieder Brücke" was named. Shortly afterwards, the renaming of the Lughofer crossing in Ried in "Landshuter Platz" followed. Since 2020, the “city guard” sculpture by the Rieder artist Andreas Sagmeister has adorned this place as a symbol of the partner city relationship.
art and culture
The exhibition of the Rieder and Landshut artist can be visited from October 24 to November 23 in the Ried folk hood. This art exhibition is a nice example of how the city twinning not only beats bridges between the administrations, but also between cultures.
These celebrations and activities are not only an expression of the deep connection between Ried and Landshut, but also a sign of living culture and long -term friendship, which is repeatedly refreshed by shared experiences and projects. Both cities can look back on a successful and enriching partnership that will certainly be expanded in the coming years.
