New clapper for the Mariendom: A sound miracle from Linz
linz. During the final work to restore the ring in the Linz Mariendom, a new lace was inserted into the largest of the seven bells. This represents an important step to optimize the sound and structural properties of the bells. After successfully performing tests, experts have recognized the need to redesign the clock that weighs over 300 kilograms and 2.3 meters long.
The Mariendom in Linz has the only fully preserved large ringing in German -speaking countries. However, it turned out that the original vibration behavior of the bells could damage the stone substance and the joints of the tower in the long run. Therefore, the clipper made of special steel was newly made and now hung in the Immaculata bell.
an impressive sound image
After the first ringing with the new clipel, Siegfried Adlberger, the bell and organ representative of the Diocese Linz, was pleased with the sound. To ensure that the new system works perfectly, frequency measurements will be carried out with seismographs in various positions in the tower during the bell ringing in the coming days. "So we will find out whether fine adjustments may still be necessary," added Adlberger.
The seven bells of the Linz Mariendom, which were cast by the Anton Gugg company in 1901, weigh a total of almost 18,000 kilograms. They were ceremoniously consecrated on April 30 and May 1, 1902. The largest bell, the Immaculata bell, with a diameter of 2.38 meters and a weight of 8,120 kilograms, was transferred to the bell room 1, 32 meters high in 1910. These impressive bells are consecrated to the “Salve Regina” and thus contribute to the acoustic identity and the appealing atmosphere of the Mariendom.
The further development of the sound optimization measures is observed with excitement, especially with regard to seismograph measurements, which will provide information about the multi -layered acoustic effects of the new installation.
