Linz in Parkchaos: Citizens fight against shrinking parking spaces!
Linz, Österreich - in Linz, reducing parking spaces ensures increasing annoyance among the residents. According to a report by ORF Oberösterreich, seven parking spaces in Stifterstraße were removed again, while the city also creates space for a new children's prime supply center. The mayor Martin Hajart (ÖVP) justifies this measure with the need for bicycle parking spaces and a charging zone. However, critics argue that the parking situation has become intolerable for many residents, especially since the rental prices for underground garages have risen sharply. In addition, rental charges are set up at various locations in the city on former car parking spaces.
Parking for residents
To make the situation easier, there have been the digital residents parking card since September 2024, which enables residents to park in the short-time parking zones without any time. This authorization is only valid for certain residential zones and can be requested online, as reported linz.at . In order to obtain such a parking authorization, the applicant must have his main residence in the requested zone and must not have a private parking space. The costs amount to 54.40 euros for one year or 94.50 euros for two years.
The city of Linz is also increasingly focusing on the expansion of the bicycle parking systems in order to meet the growing requirements for sustainable mobility. This is done as part of the Linz bicycle strategy 2024, which provides for car parking spaces to be replaced by wheel storage facilities. However, this leads to tensions, since the residents perceive the loss of parking as inadequate consideration of their needs, especially in a densely populated urban area with increasing rental pressure.
