Austria's energy transition: Why open space PV is essential

In recent years, the discussion about renewable energies in Austria has increased. Experts warn that the goals of the climate strategy can only be reached by 2030 by the extensive use of open space PV (photovoltaic). This form of energy generation could play a crucial role in realizing the necessary increase in photovoltaic energy of up to 21 terawatt hours.

Hubert Fechner, the chairman of the technology platform Photovoltaic, made clear announcements in a recent study. Accordingly, the unused potential of photovoltaic systems on houses and existing infrastructures is simply not enough to reach the ambitious climate goals. In order to advance the energy transition, alternative areas for energy generation must be considered.

The need for use of land

The current endeavor to use open spaces for photovoltaics is essential in view of the almost 21 terawatt hours that are needed by 2030. This means that not only roofs, but also agricultural areas and unused land should be considered in this context. Through targeted measures, it could be possible to win more solar energy and thus reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

A worrying factor, however, remains. Experts underline that quick and effective steps are necessary. Without serious measures to use open spaces, Austria will have difficulty realizing its energy goals. Fechner makes it clear that the current strategies are not sufficient: "We urgently have to rethink our approaches," he said.

In order to make this transition successfully, he also demands closer cooperation between politics, business and research. Only through increasing acceptance for photovoltaic installations in all areas of society can change to sustainable energy generation.

These steps are not only important for climate protection, but also for the economic future of Austria. The use of open space PV could create numerous new jobs and strengthen the local economy, while a massive contribution to environmental protection is made.

The challenges are clearly outlined. Since the climate goals are becoming increasingly pressing, politics and society have to prepare for actively tackling the possibilities of the open space PV in order to successfully implement the requirements by 2030. The call to the action is clear: use areas for photovoltaics and shape the energy transition together.
