Window falls in children: alarming numbers and important safety tips!

The warm months not only bring joy, but also an increased risk of dangerous accidents. On the event of the current occasion, the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV) urgently warns of the window and balcony of children. In the past 15 years, 191 such accidents have occurred across Austria, most of them in spring and summer, reports KFV . Particularly tragic: one or two children die every year due to falls from windows or balconies. The primary victims are toddlers aged 9 months to 5 years, which underlines the urgency of this warning.

Most accidents occurred in Vienna, followed by Upper Austria and Styria. The majority of the falls passed from the first floor, with 78 children injured and four children killed, as orf reported. A fall from only one meter can already be fatal. The KFV urgently advises to equip windows with child -proof fittings and to ensure that there are no pieces of furniture near the window that could be used as a climbing aid. This is particularly important because unattended children often show amazing skills on their journey of discovery.

In order to reduce the risk, parents should take the tips of the KFV. Windows and balcony doors should be equipped with lockable handles, and dangerous objects should be removed from window sills. Dr. Johanna Trauner-Karner, security expert in the KFV, warns: "Fly grids do not offer effective protection because they do not withstand the weight of small children." Fly grids were involved in at least 14 percent of the accidents. Parents are asked to never leave children unattended near open windows or balconies. With these safety precautions, tragic accidents may be prevented.
