World Dog Day: Pfotenhilfe demands adoption instead of buying dogs
On October 10th, World Dog Day will be celebrated worldwide, and animal welfare is particularly important this year. The association Pfotenhilfe Lochen is brought up by the worrying situation in animal shelters, where there is a lack of available dog huts. The animal protection center, which not only has to serve the Braunau district, but also three other districts in Upper Austria and Salzburg, is faced with a massive lack of space. There are either no animal shelters in these regions or they are completely overloaded.
An upcoming challenge is emerging: the new Upper Austrian dog content law, which comes into force on December 1st. This law entails sharper regulations that could also burden the animal shelters. Above all, the accommodation of potentially dangerous dogs requires new catching stations and corresponding specialist staff to ensure security. Jürgen Stadler from Pfotenhilfe criticizes that no substantial measures have been taken to improve the situation since the law's decision.
The importance of responsible adoption
of crucial importance is the choice of the new family member: people should think carefully before adopting or buying a dog. Unfortunately, it often happens that spontaneous purchases at breeders also burden the animal shelters if the puppies do not meet the expectations of the new owners. Such impulsive decisions often lead to dogs endangeless in animal shelters where they have to live under suboptimal conditions.
Stadler emphasizes: "Dogs from animal welfare should always be given. There are many dogs in these facilities, also puppies and young dogs that were saved from desperate situations, such as by pregnant bitches or due to illegal breeding. Dogs such as Rosi and their puppies from the animal protection center Pfotenhilfe are currently urgently needed care and love while waiting for their new families. Even older animals or those that are not considered "perfect" deserve to find a long -term home. The gratitude of these dogs is often remarkable and makes them wonderful companions.
