Nordic Semiconductor buys Memfault: Future of the IoT is here!
On June 25, 2025,Nordic Semiconductor announced the takeover of Memfault Inc., a leading provider of cloud platforms for networked products. This acquisition represents a remarkable change of strategy for Nordic, which marks the transition from the previous hardware supplier to a complete solution provider. By integrating Memfault's advanced skills into his portfolio, Nordic will now be able to significantly simplify the development and market launch of networked products, such as OTS reported.
The Memfault platform will be decisive for Nordic Semiconductor to enable continuous software upgrades that improve both security and performance, electricity consumption and functionality of the products. In addition, Memfaults expertise in device monitoring and the management of over-the-air software updates (OTA) is integrated into the existing NRF Cloud Service platform.
Extended support for IoT manufacturers
This acquisition strengthens Nordic Semiconductor its market position and promotes the development of smart IoT nodes and security standards. Nordic has also committed to support all manufacturers of IoT devices, including the previous Memfault customers. The further developed Memfault platform will focus on hardware integration, device management and AI functions. These steps underline how important innovative solutions are for the management of IoT devices.
In parallel to this technological progress, topics such as sustainability and climate change are becoming increasingly important in the IoT industry. Studies show that in 2023 80 % of companies already wanted to use IoT technologies to improve their sustainability approaches, such as Gi .sustainability and IoT
In the context of IoT development, the focus is indispensable for sustainable practices and the minimization of CO2 emissions. For example, when using ESIM technology, which emits 46 % less CO2 than conventional SIM cards, there is a significant reduction in the environmental impact. It is expected that over five billion ESIM-equipped devices will be on the market by 2027.
In addition, mobile phone connectivity plays an important role, especially when providing reliable connections for IoT applications in remote areas. Solutions such as Microtronics One offer integrated resilience mechanisms that help to secure valuable data even with temporary network failures. The service quality depends on the availability of the mobile phone networks, which are made available by mobile network operators, the insights of microtronics .
Overall, the acquisition of Memfault by Nordic Semiconductor not only shows the trend towards integrated solutions in the area of IoT, but also the need to promote sustainable approaches in technology. This could be the key to mastering the challenges of climate change and at the same time developing innovative products that correspond to the most modern standards.
