Schneeberger defends itself against Wiener Neustadt against the Court of Auditors' Court
The mayor of Wiener Neustadt, Klaus Schneeberger (ÖVP), has practiced sharp criticism of the Court of Auditors in an open letter. In his most recent report, the latter had found that too much soil was sealed in the city, which leads to the creation of heat islands. Schneeberger feels the statements of the Court of Auditors to exceed its skills, since the analysis and recommendations made in his eyes do not have to fall into the area of responsibility.
Projects such as the east bypass and the construction project "Maximilium am Stadtpark" were particularly targeted. Schneeberger emphasizes that the eastern bypass is one of the most frequently tested infrastructure projects and that it does not fall directly into the area of responsibility in Vienna Neustadt. The “Maximilium” project is also a private project. The mayor is surprised by the approach of the Court of Auditors and argues that their claims to the city are unrealistic.
claim of assault
In the enclosed report, the need for investments that the city cannot bear. Schneeberger recalls that the Court of Auditors had previously advised not to make superfluous investments in order to consolidate the city finances. These advice would have led to stabilized finances, but now it is criticized that no comprehensive climate adjustments were carried out that would cost at least 100 million euros. This was another point for Schneeberger, which underpins the alleged assault of the Court of Auditors.
In his open letter, Schneeberger says: "For me it is clear: it is not the task of the Court of Auditors to conduct political debates or to provide unrealistic demands, but to examine buildings." Therefore, the report is treated, but not noticed by the city.
heat islands and the need for action
In terms of the concerns of the Court of Auditors, the report states that Wiener Neustadt has a pronounced risk of heat islands. The Court of Auditors speaks of a considerable need for action and suggests clearing areas and improving the greening. These are measures that are considered necessary to alleviate the effects of climate change.
The development plan of Wiener Neustadt already requires greening measures for new buildings, but this is insufficient in areas with higher temperatures. Vulnerable groups of people in particular should be better informed and protected. For this purpose, the Court of Auditors also calls for the city's financial provision for necessary adaptation measures to the climate crisis. However, positions on these recommendations are not explicitly listed in the open letter from Schneeberger.
