SC Gmünd defeated Waidhofen/Thaya in a gripping Waldviertelby

In the exciting encounter between the 2nd Landesliga West, SC Gmünd and Waidhofen/Thaya met on Friday evening. The SC Gmünd was able to prevail 4: 3 and take important points home with them. The game was shaped by many emotions, both on and next to the square. In the first half, Gmünd put his stamp on the game and put the hosts under pressure.

Already in the 20th minute Michael Dürnitzhofer gave Gmünd the lead when he was on hand after a corner kick and headed the ball into the net. This campaign was the prelude to a strong first round of guests, which was reinforced by another goal by Julian Zimmel after a failed attempt at the Waidhofen goalkeeper Altschach in the 26th minute. Gmünd was confident and unstoppable at this point.

Waidhofen finds back into the game

In the second half, however, the picture changed suddenly. Waidhofen/Thaya came out of the cabin with a new enthusiasm and scored the connection goal in the 48th minute by captain Michael Mejta. His header after a corner kick gave the team the necessary buoyancy. But Gmünd did not let himself be put off and restored the old gap in the 80th minute: Dürnitzhofer was on the spot again and scored to 4: 1.

However, the hosts showed a remarkable fighting spirit. In the 88th minute, Fabian Teufel shortened to 2: 4, which further motivated the home side. Just two minutes later, Waidhofen was awarded a controversial penalty that Deniz Saritas safely converted. So it suddenly stood 3: 4 and the Waidhofener pushed for the equalization while Gmünd fought around every second.

After 95 exciting minutes, the final whistle sounded and the SC Gmünd celebrated the tight but deserved victory. Waidhofen/Thaya, on the other hand, had to accept the next defeat in a challenging season. The Gmünder can look forward to this derby victory and now have a little air in the relegation battle, while Waidhofen had to hand in the red lantern.
