Grill accident in the garage: 14 family members due to flue gas in clinic

A barbecue celebration in Lower Austria ended last weekend for a family with a serious incident. During the ceremony in Drosendorf-Zisserdorf, 14 family members, whose age of five to 82 years old, suffered flue gas poisoning. This happened when the family grilled in her garage while celebrating in the adjacent apartment.

The alarmed rescue workers and the police found a 55-year-old man who stated that he had opened the garage door several times for ventilation. According to him, all windows were also tipped and the door to the garden was often open. Despite these measures, the air quality was apparently so bad that the poisoning occurred.

rescue operation and treatment

The State Police Directorate in St. Pölten reported that the emergencies occurred on Saturday afternoon. When the rescue workers arrived, the 55-year-old's mother complained of nausea, which caused the other family members to also report to dizziness. This led to an immediate use of the rescue, with the rescue helicopter "Christophorus 2" and several ambulances on site.

The 14 affected were brought to various hospitals, including the clinics in Horn, Hollabrunn, Zwettl and Waidhofen on the Thaya and the University Hospital Krems. The treating doctors took the situation very seriously, since flue gas poisoning can have serious health consequences.

These events have caused concern in the community and illustrate how important it is to ensure adequate ventilation when grilling. The incidents were documented by the police, while investigations into the exact cause of the problem are running.

A similar incident can easily happen, and the awareness of the dangers of grilling in closed rooms should be sharpened. It remains to be hoped that all those affected will soon be completely recovered and that such incidents can be prevented in the future.
