Successful flood protection: Gastern's new retention basin completed
The municipality of Gastern has made a significant step to improve flood protection by successfully putting the retention basin "Mödlagl-Gasse" into operation. This marks the end of a long project, which was initiated by the devastating flood in 2013. After this event, they decided to take additional protective measures to better arm the community against future flood events.
A total of five new retention basins and the renovation of two existing systems were implemented. The investment amount amounts to an impressive 1.8 million euros, of which a significant part was financed by the EU as well as the federal government, the state and the municipality itself. The municipality bore around 15 percent of the costs.

Mayor Roland Datler was pleased to comment on the completion and pointed out the importance of this investment: "A very important investment for our community. In September this year we saw during the flood that these measures fulfill their protective function." The recent flood events have underlined the urgency of these projects and showed that the new systems were already in use.
The State Councilor Ludwig Schleritzko also emphasized the importance of these measures: "A project that strengthens the security of the community. Flood protection is a very central task of the municipality and the state of Lower Austria." He also referred to the support of the country, which provides extensive financial resources to protect the community and its citizens from natural hazards.
The flood protection measures in guesters are part of a larger program that comprises a total amount of 1.6 billion euros, which is gradually invested in various projects. The goal is not only to increase the security of the residents, but also to protect property and the local economy.
