Records in September: Austria experiences the wetest month of history

In September 2024, Austria set a new record in terms of weather technology. With record -breaking rainfall, the month is the most precious in the history of the country, whereby the measurements go back to 1858.

Geosphere Austria reports that the amount of precipitation was more than twice as high this month as on an average of September. This proves concrete figures: +118 percent compared to the usual values. This extreme weather situation led to floods and landslides in many regions of the country.

Fantastic record values

The precipitation of 447 millimeters, which was measured in places such as St. Pölten and Langenlebarn, is particularly impressive. It is particularly noteworthy that the previous records that have taken place in recent decades, as in St. Pölten with 202 millimeters in 1937 and Langenlebarn with 175 millimeters in 2014, were far exceeded.

The extraordinary rain fell particularly in the middle of the month when a low pressure area came from Italy hit large parts of Austria. Between September 12 and 16, between 100 and 400 millimeters of precipitation fell in many places, with Lower Austria, Vienna and Upper Austria being affected.

snow in the valleys and records on the mountains

The extraordinary rainfall also brought snow to many valleys, which is very unusual at the time of the year. In Styria, for example, five centimeters of snow were measured at a height of only 637 meters on September 13. On average, this only happens in Austria every five years.

In addition to the rainfall, August also brought unusual temperatures. Weather stations in Andau, Eisenstadt and other places recorded over 35 degrees Celsius on some days. However, this was only the beginning before cold air burglaries brought them a rapid cooling. In the mountains there were records among the snow depths: On September 17th, a snow height of 145 centimeters was measured at the Rudolfshütte in Salzburg, which is the highest value in September since 1980.

Overall, the September 2024 shows an extreme climate attitude that was characterized by a heat wave, followed by cold temperatures and considerable rainfall. While the lowland was 0.7 degrees above average, the temperatures in the mountains were higher than usual.

The events of September 2024 raise questions about climate change and future weather patterns in Austria. For more information and detailed reports on these records, See the article on www.vol.at .
