Snow, rain and black ice: the weekend brings weather chaos in Austria!
A violent change in the weather is coming to Austria! According to the weather forecast from Geosphere Austria, the coming weekend will be characterized by massive rain and snowfall. Friday begins with heavy rain, especially on the north side of the Alps, and brings a serious risk of black ice at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,800 meters. This has been clearly emphasized by ASFINAG, the motorway operator, which advises people to only hit the roads with winter equipment and to adapt their speed to the conditions in order to avoid accidents.
Extreme weather warnings announced
The weather situation will continue to worsen. Dense fog and rain are expected in almost all regions of Austria on Saturday, with temperatures fluctuating between minus six and plus four degrees. Especially in northern Burgenland, Vienna and Lower Austria, exceptionally large amounts of rain of 100 to 200 millimeters can be expected, although in the mountains even over 200 millimeters are possible ZAMG reported.
In addition, GeoSphere Austria warns of the risk of floods and mudslides, especially in areas with heavy rain. The snow line may drop below 1000 meters, which may lead to snow in many valleys. At higher altitudes, up to 150 centimeters of fresh snow is expected, which could be particularly problematic for traffic.
Stormy winds exacerbate the situation
Wind will also play a role, with strong to stormy gusts of up to 90 km/h forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, particularly in the eastern half of the country. According to meteorologists, the situation is extremely serious as the combination of rain, snow and wind can threaten not only road conditions but also power supplies. This particularly affects mountain regions such as the Arlberg Pass and the Brenner Pass, where drivers affected by snow and black ice should be prepared for winter weather. A comprehensive warning has also been issued to neighboring countries such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where similar weather conditions are expected.
