Sustainability in Scheibbs: Active mobility as the key to urban development

In the city of Scheibbs, the topics of active mobility and urban renewal were the focus of this year's Sustainability Days. City Councilor for the Environment Joseph Hofmarcher emphasized the importance of promoting walking and cycling in order to improve the town center. This initiative is part of a comprehensive process aimed at improving the quality of life in the city.

The lecture evening, which took place on the kultur.portal, brought together experts, including Helmut Koch from the traffic planning office “komobile”. Koch emphasized that a change in thinking was necessary for successful implementation. It's not about completely banning the car from everyday life, but rather about making walking easier and making everyday journeys more attractive.

Fewer car journeys for short distances

Koch pointed out that many car trips are not necessary as they often cover short distances of less than five kilometers. These routes could easily be covered by bike if the infrastructure is designed accordingly - with as few stops as possible and using great bike paths.

In addition to the lectures, there was an excursion to Wieselburg, where the participants traveled on the Erlauftalbahn. There, the head of the building authority, Thomas Lichtenschopf, explained to the guests the progress in the city's pedestrian and cycle path network. A barrier-free and safe network was created, which is equipped, among other things, with a new footbridge over the platforms that connects the high school and the train station.

These developments show that a redesign of the mobility infrastructure is necessary to enable the population to move around in an environmentally friendly and healthy way. Since this year, a nationwide speed limit of 30 km/h has been in effect in Wieselburg, which is intended to further increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Such measures are crucial to creating a role model for sustainable mobility in the region.
