The fire brigade in Merchweiler was alerted to a dramatic operation on the night of October 5, 2024. At 0:45 a.m., the fire brigade received the emergency call through a large fire in an empty hotel restaurant on the main street. Due to the threatening Situation, the Illingen fire brigade was also requested with its aerial ladder to support the extinguishing work.
When the first fire fighters arrived, the upper floor and the roof structure of the building were already on fire. The lights of the flames shot several meters high from windows and roof, while thick smoke was visible. At first it was unclear whether there were still people in the building, but it quickly turned out that the property had been uninhabited for a long time. The emergency services reacted immediately and alarmed further support, including a second turntable ladder made of Quierschied and a respiratory protection device car from Neunkirchen to contain the fire risk.

The extinguishing work was carried out under extreme conditions because the advanced fire was not possible. In order to effectively combat the fire, several jet pipes and two turntable ladders were used. The fire brigade completely blocked the main street during the operation to ensure both the safety of the emergency services and the onlookers. Interestingly, the nearby Oktoberfest ended at this time, which led to a many onlookers on site. The police took care of the closure of the area to prevent injuries from falling parts.
A total of over 100 fire brigade, police and the German Red Cross (DRK) worked to extinguish the fire. After the fire was brought under control after around an hour, parts of the roof had to be removed to delete hidden embers. In addition, the entire building was covered with a special foam to prevent a rebuilt.
The main extinguishing work was completed around 6 a.m. Nevertheless, the post -extinguishing work continued until around 8 a.m. High -ranking officials were also present, including the district fire chief Sascha Cattarius, the deputy Dr. Michael Marx and District Administrator Sören Meng to get an idea of the situation.
In the coming hours, extensive rework will be necessary. The fire brigade's equipment station is required to make the equipment ready for use again. This includes maintaining breathing apparatus, cleaning of hoses as well as control and cleaning the operational clothing. Defective material is also replaced to ensure operational readiness.
