Castor transport to Philippsburg: Nuclear waste again in Germany
Castor transport to Philippsburg: Nuclear waste again in Germany
After almost four years, the time has come again: Germany has reached a Castor transport with highly radioactive nuclear waste. The four heavy containers crossed the French border in the early evening and arrived in Philippsburg, a city near Karlsruhe. Here the containers are accommodated in a state intermediate camp on the site of a nuclear power plant.
The Gesellschaft für Nuclear-Service received the approval for this transport a few days ago from the Baden-Württemberg Administrative Court. In the containers there are waste resulting from the reworking of fuel elements of German nuclear power plants in France. For security reasons, there is no information about the exact details of the route and the schedule.
reactions to the transport
No further transports to Philippsburg are planned for the near future. However, the interim storage facility there is operated by 2047 and it is expected that this must be extended due to the lack of a final bearing option. The last Castor transport to Germany took place in November 2020 and comprised six containers that were brought to Biblis from the British reprocessing in Sellafield.
The debate about nuclear waste and its storage remains up -to -date and explosive. Many questions about the security and future of radioactive waste in Germany are still unclear, which the continuing concerns of the population feeds. The discussion is absolutely necessary, since numerous nuclear waste stores already exist in Germany and the surrounding countries. This content is important for society and mean that pragmatic solutions have to be sought to avoid future conflicts.
