Hagenberg Castle: 800 years of history invite you to travel back in time to summer
A special anniversary is being celebrated in picturesque Hagenberg this summer: Hagenberg Castle, which sits majestically in the middle of the rolling hills of the Weinviertel, is celebrating its 800th birthday. Michael Osmann, the proud owner of the castle, used this occasion to invite friends to a summer party and open his home to the public. “There was nothing more suitable to ask friends to a summer party,” explains Osmann. He and his wife Marion have made it their mission to preserve the castle's historical roots in a modern context.
The castle, originally built as a moated castle, is today not a perfect structure with smooth walls, but rather a living project that honorably preserves the traces of time. Visitors can discover crooked walls and small bumps that reflect the history of the building. Many materials have been saved, including old floorboards from the Hofburg, which are now part of the castle's rustic atmosphere.
A place of sustainability
“My understanding of construction stopped with the invention of reinforced concrete,” says construction expert Michael Osmann. The engineer relies on traditional craftsmanship and tries to use historical materials in new contexts. His wife Marion, with a background in the theater, brings creative accents to the rooms, which impress with exquisite furniture and lighting design. This is all part of a comprehensive upcycling project believed to be the largest of its kind in the country.
The history of the castle goes back to the 13th century, when Heinrich von Hackenberg initiated its construction. Over the centuries, the castle has seen many transformations and uses, from its destruction during the Black Army to its status as a refuge during Turkish sieges. The entire historical context is a fascinating part of the experiences that Michael Osmann wants to bring to his guests.
Artistic past
In the period after the Second World War, the castle became a retreat for artists from the “Vienna Group”, including prominent figures such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser. This creative heritage is maintained today and offers a unique insight into the cultural history of the place. Today the castle is flourishing again and the Osmann family is investing in contemporary use that makes the property a unique experience for visitors.
Crew members and art enthusiasts are warmly invited to explore the castle and immerse themselves in a world that offers both historical depth and modern flair. “It is thanks to our new, creative heyday that the castle is now perceived as a unique retreat from the hectic everyday life,” says Osmann.
For all those who are fascinated by this special building and its history, there is the opportunity to contact the Initiative Hagenberg association or simply pay a visit. The Osmann family is always happy to welcome guests who would like to get to know the magic of the castle better. Details about this unique place can also be found on www.meinkreis.at.
