Inspired by Goodall: HLUW students fight for food waste

The HLUW YSPERALTIC recently organized an exciting event on the topic of food waste. On November 18, 2024, the pupils Sophie Hofer and Amelie Kohoutek discussed as part of their diploma thesis with various experts about solutions in dealing with excess foods. The focus was on confectionery sections and how to use them sustainably. Top -class guests such as Anton Haubenberger from Haubis and Florian Pfeiffer from Moser Wurst GmbH were among the discussants who gave valuable insights into their experiences.

A big thank you deserves the guests who have enriched the discussion through their expertise. This knowledge offer was not only informative, but also an impetus for the students to continue to get involved in this socially relevant area.

An inspiring lecture by Jane Goodall

Another highlight for the students of HLUW was participation in a lecture by the renowned primatologist and environmental activist Jane Goodall at the end of October. At this event in Salzburg, which was part of the Roots and Shoots initiative, the students received deeper insights into Goodall's impressive career and their suggestions for the responsibility of young people in relation to environmental issues.

Goodall, which began to research the social structures of chimpanzees in the 1960s, leads their listeners back to their roots and told about their first encounters with these animals. With a focused look, she brought the young people closer to the often complex relationship between humans and animals.

The responsibility of the youth

In the second half of her lecture, Goodall emphasized the challenges that we face on the subject of climate change and pollution, and explicitly addressed the youth. "Each of you can make a difference," she said, what inspired and encouraged the audience to actively work for environmental protection.

She ended her speech with a concise message of hope: nature has the ability to renew if we give her the chance. She reminded the students that their individual actions have a direct impact on the world.

"You Cannot Get Through A Single Day Without Having an Impact on the World Around You", she said convincingly and asked everyone to think about the type of difference they want to make.

In addition to the lectures, the students had the opportunity to experience workshops at the University of Salzburg. From botany to geology to electron microscopy, they received exciting insights into the world of natural sciences and were able to look at fascinating preparations up close.

These experiences were both educational and motivating and the young people stimulate to deal with the current challenges of our time, including sustainable food utilization and the protection of our planet.
