Refurbishment of the Lilienfeld Abbey: A jewel of history will soon shine!
In the run-up to the 800th anniversary of the consecration of the church in 2030, the Cistercian Stift Lilienfeld, one of the most important monasteries in Austria, received a comprehensive general renovation that is already divided into several construction stages. Most recently, the Lower Austrian state government announced the promotion of the renovation work on Friday with a sum of 150,000 euros. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasized that this support not only preserves a cultural heritage, but also strengthened the economic importance of the region, such as kathpress.at reported.
As early as July, the roof of the farm building between the church and prelate courtyard was re-covered in the first stage of construction. Future work includes the renovation of the northern church hop massade, the renewal of the historic box windows and further facade work in the abbey area. The Lilienfeld Abbey, which was founded in 1202, has developed over the centuries into a central station at Via Sacra, a traditional pilgrimage path between Vienna and Mariazell. It currently houses about 20 Cistercian monks who take care of the liturgy and care of the cultural heritage, such as stift-lilienfeld.at in addition.
The monastery, whose impressive architecture and history attract visitors from near and far, sees not only a necessity in the ongoing renovation, but also an opportunity to strengthen its role as a cultural and tourist center of the Mostviertel region. Abbot Pius Maurer and his team are committed to ensuring that the pen will continue to be a place of faith and community in the future, while the work continues. The largest Cistercian monastery in Austria is not only modernized, but also prepared for future generations.
