Susan Rothenberg: First exhibition by the neo -expressionist in Krems!
Kunsthalle Krems, Österreich - On April 4, 2025, the Kunsthalle Krems will become the first museum in Austria for the important American artist Susan Rothenberg. This solo exhibition is dedicated to its versatile work and not only marks an important cultural moment, but also the start of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Kunsthalle Krems. From April 5 to November 2, a total of 31 works from five decades are to be admired from April 5 to November 2, which provide a comprehensive insight into Rothenberg's artistic development.
Susan Rothenberg, who lived from 1945 to 2020, is considered a pioneer of neo -expressionism. Her art made a decisive contribution to reviving figurative painting in the 1970s and 1980s and is seen as an important part of modern painting. Florian Steininger, the artistic director of the Kunsthalle, emphasizes how strong Rothenberg's works are characterized by dynamic brush strokes and emotional intensity. The exhibition includes both its early horse pictures and work with human characters and movement studies that were created in the 1980s. Their “Horse Paintings”, which have a prehistoric character and were first shown in 1974, are particularly noteworthy.
diverse work in focus
The exhibited works can be divided into different creative phases. Rothenberg started minimalist horse pictures in the 1970s and quickly developed into intensive neo -expressionist work in the 1980s. These works show not only dynamic, figurative representations, but also a strong connection to nature and animal motifs that were created on a horseanche in New Mexico during their time. There she lived together with her husband, the artist Bruce Nauman, and increasingly won inspiration from the wildlife and the landscapes of the region.
The late work includes fascinating images of puppets and realistic-painting representations of animals, the expressiveness of which demonstrates sophisticated technical skills. These works not only reflect Rothenberg's artistic evolution, but also their deep connections to nature.
an important art event
The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Krems is not only a tribute to Rothenberg's life and work, but also an important part of the anniversary year of the institution, which was opened on March 31, 1995 and has been performing over 240 exhibitions since then. An extensive accompanying and supporting program is offered as part of the anniversary. Rothenberg celebrated her 80th birthday in 2025, which gives this retrospective additional emotional value.
With loans from renowned institutions such as the Hall Art Foundation, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the relevance and influence of Rothenberg's work on contemporary art becomes clear. The Kunsthalle Krems thus not only recognizes the artist, but also the art scene in general, which in Austria has a large number of talented artists who enrich the country's cultural heritage, as described on DetailsOrt Kunsthalle Krems, Österreich Quellen
