Renaissance of the Senftenberg castle ruins: Bridge New building for visitors

The castle ruins Senftenberg, majestically over the place of the same name in the Kremstal in the Waldviertel, attracts visiting people with its historic aura and fabulous views of the surrounding wine terraces. The impressive wine -growing areas, which are known for the Green Veltliner and Riesling, offer a picturesque panorama that perfectly rounds off the land idyll.

An important element of the castle ruins is the bridge that connects the ruins with the main structure. This bridge, originally designed as a pedestrian bridge, urgently needed repairs after severe rainfall endangered the foundation in 2004. The rapid reaction of the bridge and translation company Melk of the Austrian Armed Forces, supported by volunteers, led to the establishment of a new, wider wooden bridge. This significantly improved the supply of materials and food.

plans to renew the bridge

The existing bridge has a length of 18 meters and a clear width of 1.8 meters. In the past, however, spruce wood has been used, which is now severely damaged. Recent inspections have found that the substructure also has rotten wood, which led to the decision to replace the entire wooden construction in 2024 and switch to larch wood. This measure is important for the longevity of the infrastructure should the approval and financing be secured. There is currently an offer from the specialist company that estimates the material and labor costs at 31,000 euros.

Despite the financial challenges, the association is optimistic about the preservation of the Senftenberg castle ruins. Thanks to the personal commitment of the members and intensive donations, the association wants to manage the project in order not only to renew the bridge, but also maintain the attractive connection to the castle ruin. The castle ruins is not only a sight, but also a cultural place that attracts locals, tourists and hikers alike.

The association and its mission

The association, which has been active since 1967, has set itself the task of not only restoring the castle ruins, but also using it as an event location. Events such as "Wine enjoyment between heaven and earth", the popular vinyl party in summer or the traditional festive advent crib opening are fixed components of the event calendar in Senftenberg. The possibility of renting the premises also contributes to the financing of the conservation measures.

The history of the Senftenberg castle ruins goes back to the 11th century when it was built as a military and defense facility. Numerous changes of ownership and destruction shaped the fate of the building, which was finally set up in 1645 by Swedish troops. Today, after years of decay and restoration, the ruin is supervised by the market town of Senftenberg to prevent further decay.

The future renewal of the bridge is another chapter in the history of the Senftenberg castle ruins. It expresses the determination and tireless commitment of the club members who are passionate about preserving and continuing this historical heritage for posterity.
