Leinzell receives new REWE: Opportunities and risks for local dealers

In the past few days it has been known that Leinzell will receive a new Rewe market. This decision was made by the municipal councils of Leinzell and Göggingen during a meeting in which the planning of a development plan was discussed. Mayor Danny Kuhl expressed his consent to the project, since food markets are always welcome in rural areas.

But the new developments also bring about challenges. Access to the Rewe market raises concerns because it could interrupt the student path along the L 1157. The confluence area will be 17 meters wide, which could be a dangerous situation, especially for the students who often choose the direct path on the street. City councilor Marco Ziegler fears that drivers could be distracted and children could overlook.

sales losses for local shops

An analysis shows that the settlement of the Rewe market will also have far-reaching economic effects. It is estimated that local bakeries and butchers in Leinzell and Göggingen will lose 400,000 to 500,000 euros annually. The further environment, such as Schechingen and Iggingen, could even be expected with a further loss of sales of 1.3 million euros. Together, the new market could generate an annual turnover of around five million euros.

While some local business owners are concerned and already feel the effects, there are also others who remain optimistic. Gudrun Leinmüller from the confectionery café Leinmüller is convinced that, unlike Rewe's offer, her specialties offer a competitive advantage. In the Löwenmetzgerei in Göggingen, on the other hand, the market participant is expected to reduce the customer base.

An example of the negative consequences of market settlements can be observed in Gschwend, where the Schneider family announced the closure of their food market "near and good" after a new net market was opened. According to the new competition, the level of sales was no longer wearable.

environmental and planning aspects

In addition to the economic concerns, there is a challenge in relation to the environment. The site on which the Rewe market is to be built is currently protected as a mowing meadow according to EU guidelines. A target deviation procedure is required for the establishment, but this is considered promising.

The citizens and the decision -makers agree that a market settlement in rural areas brings many opportunities, but also challenges. The exact impact on local retail remains, because while some business owners are concerned, others see the future optimistic.
