HIV new diagnoses in Baden-Württemberg: A look at the figures 2023

Stuttgart/Berlin-In 2022, a total of 336 new HIV diagnoses were found in Baden-Württemberg, as can be seen from the epidemiological bulletin of the Robert Koch Institute. This number pays attention to the continued relevance of HIV infections in the region.

In the decade from 2014 to 2023, a total of 3,623 new infections were registered in southwestern Germany. These figures show that there is still a risk from the virus, although there are progress in the field of education and medical treatment. It is striking that last year Bavaria is at the top with the most new diagnoses in Germany, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia and again Baden-Württemberg. It is important to emphasize that these statistics do not necessarily reflect the total number of new infections, since many people often infect themselves and only receive the positive test years later.

The importance of HIV diagnoses

The human immune deficiency virus, HIV for short, is the trigger for the disease AIDS that attacks the immune system and makes the body susceptible to other serious illnesses. The special thing about the HIV is that it does not show any typical symptoms for years. So it can often take many years for a person to learn that they are infected. This makes early treatment and understanding of the severity of the disease and the risk of infection for others.

The danger that is from HIV is an important topic for public health. Even though there are currently never before the treatment of HIV, the sensitization in society remains a central approach to combating the distribution of the virus.

The current situation shows that despite all efforts to clarify and prevention, work is still necessary so that the number of new diagnoses does not develop negatively. In the region, the focus should therefore be on educational measures and tests in order to make people aware of how they can protect themselves and what options for treatment exist.
