Nostalgic steam railway between Amstetten and Oppingen blossomed

in Amstetten is currently working on the maintenance of the museum railway before the popular Santa Claus trips begin at the end of November. Every Saturday, volunteers from the Ulm Eisenbahnfreunde Association meet to bring the route between Amstetten and Oppingen for the nostalgic steam train. This steam train attracts hundreds of visitors every year and is a real attraction in the region.

The preservation of the museum railway is not just a hobby, but a real heart project. According to the section manager Heinrich Biro, the idea for the museum railway was born in 1985 after the then railway line between Amstetten and Laichingen was abandoned. Thanks to the commitment of the then mayor of Amstetten, the breakdown of the tracks could be stopped. So the remaining piece of track between Amstetten and Oppingen was preserved and is used today for the operation of the museum railway.

activities of the volunteers

The efforts of the volunteers are currently concentrating on the exchange of a total of 300 thresholds. During the voluntary commitment, it is diligently sawed, hammered and drilled to ensure that the tracks are also ready for use. These thresholds are crucial for the stability of the tracks and thus for the safety of the journeys.

The work of the Ulm railway fans shows how historical values can be preserved through joint use. Such a museum railway not only revolves around the nostalgic charm of the steam locomotive, which sniffs through the landscape, but also about the sense of community that is promoted by the collaboration. In recent years, the railway has been renovated and modernized thanks to tireless helpers.

Preparations for the Santa Claus trips are an example of the use of the volunteers who are passionate about the preservation of the railways. This not only offers an insight into the tradition of railway driving, but also promotes awareness of the importance of historical means of transport in today's world.
