Renewable energy community: advantages for St. Georgen and the surrounding area
In the picturesque St. Georgen am Ybbsfelde, an exciting initiative is created: The “Renewable Energy community Amstetten-Ost”, which was launched in autumn 2024, gives the residents the opportunity to move into ecologically produced energy and also exchange them with each other. This could fundamentally change the way people deal with energy.
The idea behind an energy community, often also abbreviated as an EEG, is quite simple. Households merging to use the regionally generated electricity together. For example, if a household has installed a photovoltaic system and thus produces more electricity than it needs, it can be sold to the community. This happens to a tariff defined in the community, which is a fair and transparent solution.
membership and participation
For participation in the EEG Amstetten-Ost, all private households, small and medium-sized companies as well as organizations come into question that are connected to the Amstetten-Ost substation. The communities involved include St. Georgen, Neustadl, Viehdorf, Euratsfeld, Blindenmarkt and Ferschnitz. Interested parties can become a member at any time, even if there are already contracts for electricity delivery or acceptance. However, a prerequisite for participation is an intelligent measuring device, also known as the "smart meter" that closely monitors the electricity consumption.
But what do the members have from this community? The most obvious advantage lies in local and clean electricity production. The members receive fair prices for the energy provided, and the costs for the electricity used from the community are lower, which leads to a higher independence from large energy companies.
