New star at Red Bull: Liam Lawson replaces Sergio Perez in F1!

Red Bull Racing is entering the 2025 Formula 1 season with a breath of fresh air: The talented New Zealander Liam Lawson takes over from Sergio Perez, who has to leave the team after a disappointing season. According to Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, it was Lawson's exceptional mental strength that was the deciding factor in his promotion. “Liam Lawson is mentally the strongest of our juniors,” said Marko in a conversation with Today.at.

Lawson, who has only a few Grands Prix under his belt, was chosen for his development potential. He could prove his mental strength especially in the demanding environment next to world champion Max Verstappen. “It will be crucial that he accepts that he cannot beat Verstappen,” explains Marko. Lawson has already mastered this challenge in the DTM, where he lost the championship in 2021 due to unfortunate circumstances in the last race. But despite the setbacks, he always showed perseverance and never gave up, which Marko particularly praises. “There were ups and downs during the season, but he never gave up,” he emphasizes Motorsport-Total.com reported.

A new era for Red Bull

The decision to sign Lawson comes at a time when the team needs fresh inspiration. Marko is convinced that Lawson is not only able to adapt to Verstappen, but also provides valuable support to the team. “If Lawson gets within three tenths of a second of Verstappen in 2025, that should be enough to collect points for the constructors’ world championship,” said Marko optimistically. These demands are high, but with his strong mentality Lawson could make a decisive impact in the new season.
