Neos blends coalition negotiations: Where is political stability?

Österreich - The political tensions in Austria reach a new highlight! The NEOS abruptly broken off negotiations on the desired turquoise-red-pink coalition on Friday. Party leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger showed that the two larger parties, the ÖVP and the SPÖ, never really have the will to tackle fundamental reforms. Concrete topics such as guest houses and the budget have always been rejected, which in their opinion leads to Austria in a serious crisis. According to Meinl-Reisinger, the government negotiations were shaped by "power policy" instead of real will to work. Therefore, this will not be continued, as krone.at reported.

The background for this critical situation are complex. In the National Council election in September, the FPÖ received the most votes with 28.85 percent, followed by the ÖVP with 26.3 percent and the SPÖ with 21.1 percent. Despite these arithmetical possibilities, FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl did not find any partners for coalition formation. Therefore, ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS took on the negotiations in November, which, however, proved to be extremely difficult. Topics such as economy and tax even led to the fact that ÖVP boss Karl Nehammer threatened the SPÖ with a termination of negotiations, such as FAZ.net reported.

The political framework is more than tense. While the NEOS withdraw from the coalition idea, the other parties are faced with the challenge of finding a way out of this political mess. The pressure is growing, especially in view of the demands for urgently needed reforms for the country.
