Sustainable tourism: Cities are calling for more support from the federal government!
In a National Council meeting on April 26, 2025, Wolfgang Kocevar, the SP communal spokesman, spoke about the so-called Plan-T, which was developed in cooperation with around 600 companies. The main goal of this plan is to promote sustainable tourism, with everyone involved, including the employees, entrepreneurs, the domestic population and the guests. Kocevar emphasized the essential role of cities and municipalities in Austrian tourism, where Vienna was highlighted as a particularly positive example.
The Danube Island Festival was mentioned as a prime example of an event that attracts both locals and tourists. Kocevar also called for increased financial support for cities and municipalities to maintain and expand the tourism -relevant infrastructure. Around 2000 cities and municipalities in Austria record around 45 million arrivals and almost 150 million overnight stays annually. A total of around 90,000 tourist companies seamlessly offer jobs for around 300,000 employees in the country.
Sustainable tourism offers in Bavaria
In the meantime, also work intensively on sustainable tourism constructions in the neighboring district of Regen. The newly founded round table for "sustainable tourism" in the Arberland combines various actors such as the Nature Park and National Park Bayerischer Wald as well as the Vacation Association at the Bauernhof e.V. The aim of this merger is to support the municipalities and hosts in the district of Regen in the creation of sustainable offers.
The role of mobility in tourism
Another important aspect of sustainable tourism is mobility. According to the information from the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), mobility is closely linked to all facets of tourism. Technological developments, changing travel behavior and climate -specific influences make it necessary to find sustainable mobility solutions that respect both the regional habitat and the needs of the guests.
In order to offer an attractive overall package for travelers, the accessibility of the destination is of central importance. Innovative mobility offers should not only be customer -friendly, but also environmentally conscious. Such solutions can represent a location and competitive advantage for regions. The BMVIT offers exchange formats and information brochures to promote networking between the actors of tourism, mobility and climate protection.
Overall, it becomes clear that there are considerable efforts in both Austria and Bavaria in order to promote sustainable tourism. Through joint initiatives and creative concepts, a positive development for the leisure and tourism industry in both regions could be achieved.
