In the context of boxing, it is interesting to see how boxing in Germany has grown historically. The "German Reich Association for Amateur Boxes" (DRFAB) was founded on December 5, 1920 in Berlin. The first German championships in amateur boxes took place just a day later, in which 36 athletes from 9 clubs and 2000 spectators were present. In just one year, the number of boxing clubs in Berlin rose from 1 to 24 to 1933.
The development of the amateur boxing in Germany
The DRFAB joined the International Association Fiba and organized courses. In 1928 he took part in the Olympic Games, which was a large milestone for German boxing. After the Second World War, the amateur boxing was initially prohibited by the Allied powers, but in 1949 the association of regional boxing associations for the foundation of the "German Amateur Box Association" (DABV) took place.
The DABV was included in the AIBA in 1950 and took part in the 1952 Olympic Games. The rivalries between East and West Germany in boxing were reinforced by the organization in the GDR and the creation of joint teams until 1964. In 1990, the GDR and FRG boxing associations were finally united under the name DABV, which today comprises around 800 clubs with 64,000 members.
The DABV has celebrated international successes in recent years, including Olympic medals and world championship titles, which underlines the high quality of the German amateur boxing. This tradition will continue with events such as the upcoming boxing event of Mario Haas and boxing remains an exciting platform for new talents. For more information about the history of the amateur boxing in Germany, drop by on the side of the German Boxing Association.
