Modernization of Villach Central Station: Progress and outlook

The ÖBB Infrastructure AG has commissioned Leyrer + Graf to renovate the Villach Central Station. This work aims to modernize the train station by 2027 and to significantly increase the comfort for train travelers. Visitors can experience the intensive construction work up close because the station is considered one of the central traffic hits in Austria.

A committed team of up to 30 people has been active in Villach for some time and is working to bring the train station up to the latest technical status. Three island platforms are completely renewed, including new roofs that are equipped with photovoltaic modules. New entrances to the train station are also created, which should make access easier for travelers.

important construction phases successfully completed

The construction work is divided into several phases. An important section was recently completed: tracks 205 and 207 are now in operation. In addition, the edge platform was extended by 75 meters. This progress is a milestone in the extensive renovation project that takes place in several construction phases.

Another important aspect of this renovation is the installation of a noise barrier. The access from the east and west were also adapted to the new circumstances and are to be put into operation in October 2024. New bicycle parking facilities are created at these accesses that expand the existing bike & ride offer.

continuation of the construction work

In the coming months, the construction work will continue as planned. The next step includes the paving work and the construction of the roof on the new island platform 2/3. The roofs of the platforms are now more than 30 years old and are replaced by modern wood and glass constructions. These new roofs are not only aesthetically appealing, but also environmentally friendly, since they are equipped with photovoltaic modules that are integrated into the design.

These modules will deliver the electricity for the buildings at the main train station and thus contribute to the sustainable energy supply. Work on the Inselbablebig 2/3 should be completed by the end of the year, after which the conversion of the island platform 4/5 is started.

The performance of Leyrer + Graf is also the installation of modern waiting bikers that offer travelers protection against weather conditions. In addition, the corrosion protection is renewed at the lifts and new handrails are installed on the stairs to increase security.

With every completed construction phase, the modern Villacher Central Station moves within reach. The careful planning and execution of the work, as well as the close cooperation between Leyrer + Graf and the project team of the ÖBB infrastructure form the basis for the success of this major project.
