Postal votes: Carinthian National Council election brings unexpected changes
In Carinthia, the votes from the postal voting made minor but remarkable changes in the election of the National Council election 2024. The election took place on September 29, and Carinthia was the first federal state to count his voices. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) achieved a clear victory and exceeded expectations in most communities in the state.
Yesterday the postal voting cards were counted, which led to a slight adjustment of the preliminary result. A total of 432,330 people were entitled to vote in Carinthia, 331,722 of whom were voted. This corresponds to a turnout of 76.7 %. 328,159 of the votes cast were valid, while 3,563 votes were invalid, which makes 1.1 % of the vote.
election results of the National Council election: FPÖ dominates
The FPÖ is clearly at the top with 38.4 % and thus records an increase of 18.6 % compared to the 2019 election. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) follows 23.1 %, which corresponds to a decrease of 3 %. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) reaches 20.8 %, which means a minus of 14.1 %. The Greens cut off at 4.7 % and thus lose 4.8 % compared to the previous choice. However, the NEOs were able to achieve an increase of 1 % and reach 7.8 % of the votes.
Voter turnout and the results show not only the changes in the electorate itself, but also the dynamics of the political climate in Carinthia. The information about the specific voices in the different districts will remain exciting. From the electoral districts, such as Klagenfurt and Villach, the results open the picture of the local political mood. In Villach-Land, the FPÖ even reaches 40.4 % of the votes, which corresponds to an increase of 20.0 %.
The detailed evaluation of the elections illustrates the differences in voting and how different parties perform in specific regions. For Carinthia it remains to be seen how these preliminary results will influence the next political steps and possibly the composition of future governments.
