Together against violence: KFBÖ actions in the region

The Catholic Women's Movement in Austria (KFBÖ) described the fight against violence against women as a "huge social construction site". According to the chairman Angelika Ritter-Grepl, it is urgently needed not only to take prevention measures, but also to actively involve men and boys in the process. Otherwise, "violent crimes against women will be accepted". This became clear in a broadcast on Wednesday. The efforts focus on raising society to this problem.

As part of the global “16 days against violence” campaign, which takes place from November 25th to December 10th, the KFBÖ is planning a variety of events. A highlight is the "Walk of Shame" on December 3 in Bruck an der Mur, while in Innsbruck a political evening prayer takes place in the hospital church on November 24th.

promote social change

Ritter-Grepl underlines that violence against women is a serious symptom for the still existing hierarchical differences between men and women. In order to tackle the often invisible dimensions of this problem, the KFBÖ would like to attract public attention to the topic and make changes in society during these two weeks. In Linz, the women's movement together with other organizations will organize a vernissage in the “House of Women” on November 25th. In many places all over Austria, the KFBÖ will take part in the UN campaign "Orange the World" in order to set a visible sign against violence through orange lighting.

particularly emphasized is an art project in Spittal an der Drau, in which the KFB Carinthia, together with partner organizations, exhibits sculptures by the artist and KfB diocesan chairman Ulrike Schwager. These works that arose during pandemic address violence against women and are intended to encourage the viewers to deal with. The sculptures are exhibited in empty shops in the city center and are accompanied by texts by the author Heidi Wassermann-Dullnig. With her work, brother -in -law would like to make the unspeakable visible and toast a discussion that includes both those affected and perpetrators.

Outside of the campaign, the KFBÖ continuously promotes projects for the psychosocial support of women and girls affected by violence as well as educational programs that are increasingly inclusive and include men and boys. The women's movement emphasizes that a sustainable and gender -friendly society must be based on making all needs audible.

In the coming days, violence against women will also play a central role in other dioceses. A panel discussion of the Catholic Education Center in the Archdiocese of Vienna will take place on December 11th and deal with the problem. The event entitled "War Jo net so bad" is shaped by experts from different areas.

The "16 days against violence against women" also include international commemoration days, such as November 25, which is reminiscent of the murder of the sisters Mirabal, and the World Day of Human Rights on December 10th. Between these dates, the topic of violence prevention is also made visible, such as with a crochet campaign on the same topic on November 22nd. With these activities, the KFBÖ wants to raise awareness of an urgent social problem.

The versatility of the actions should not only indicate existing problems, but also show concrete solutions. For more information and details on these significant topics, interested parties can be found at www.katholisch.at read.
