Carinthian citizens fight against impending ban on wind power - their voice counts!
Kärnten, Österreich - In Carinthia, resistance is formed against a possibly threatening total ban on wind power. The “Forum Nature Conservation and Economic Affairs Carinthia” has mobilized over 1,000 supporters from different areas in the past four weeks, including high representatives of the local economy such as Sabine Herlitschka from Infineon Austria and members of several parties, including SPÖ, ÖVP as well as Greens and Neos. Christoph Aste, the chairman of the association, emphasizes the urgency for a legal approach, since on January 12th will be decided on the future of wind power in Carinthia, such as ots.at reported.
At the same time, the state of Carinthia, represented by the state government under Martin Gruber and Sebastian Schuschnig, has submitted plans to define wind turbines that are to be the only places in the future where new wind farms can be built. These zones affect seven municipalities in the northeast of Carinthia, including Metnitz and Reichenfels, while in the remaining 125 municipalities no new wind turbines may be built. According to these plans, a maximum of 50 additional wind turbines are to be approved, which means a total of fewer than 100 wind turbines in Carinthia, reports the .
criticism of the wind power opponents
The opponents of wind power try to fuel fears that hundreds of wind turbines in Carinthia could be built, but the state government argues that a total ban of the wind power of the country's economic future harms harm. The planned wind turbines are intended to serve as part of a "Carinthian path" to promote a balanced energy mix, whereby the government aims to comply with the renewable expansion law without ignoring the fears of the population. Both ministers also emphasize that these regulations are not equivalent to a complete ban on wind power and that a mix of opportunities is important for the Carinthian citizens.
