Election results 2024: Mayor Hermagor provide insights and views

The recent election results of the National Council election 2024 caused a stir in Austria and are particularly evident in the Hermagor district. Here three mayors give their perspectives on the elections and discuss the challenges that arise from the results.

A central topic in the mayors' statements is the general dissatisfaction of the voters, especially in rural regions. This unrest seems to result from the perception that many important problems, such as emigration and decline in the infrastructure, are not adequately addressed.

The view of Leopold Astner

Mayor Leopold Astner from the ÖVP expresses concerns about the future prospects: "The election brought some surprises, but dissatisfaction was to be expected," said Astner. Many citizens feel on the losing side and the trust in the established parties have been shaken. He speaks of a certain perplexity regarding a coalition partner, especially the FPÖ. Despite the FPÖ's election gains, Astner expresses that responsibility is now on their shoulders, which he considers to be problematic. "Stability is necessary, but whether a coalition with the FPÖ can help is questionable."

The mayor's statements reflect a complex feeling that even with a change at the political tip, which remains challenges and may continue to be released inadequate.

Josef Zoppoth about lost trust

Another perspective comes from Josef Zoppoth, the mayor of Kötschach-Mauthen. He emphasizes that the loss of trust from the ÖVP and the Greens did not come unexpectedly. "Over the past few years, volunteers and citizens have expressed protests against Corona policy and the increasing cost of living," explains Zoppoth. He sees the high turnout in his place as a positive sign. At the same time, he expresses the desire for a government that can give people hope again: "It is time for a new orientation that strengthens confidence in the future."

Despite a generally high turnout and the growth of the FPÖ, Zoppoth wants to represent a stronger representation of the SPÖ, which is not in prospect due to internal arguments.

Johannes Lenzhofer and his optimistic attitude

Mayor Johannes Lenzhofer von Dellach brings a positive perspective to the discussion by describing the high turnout as "very pleasant". He sees the opportunity for the parties to enter serious negotiations. Lenzhofer expresses hope that the conversations will be held open and that all political actors pull together: "It is important to listen to the needs of people and find solutions based on it," he explains.

The political landscapes and coalition talks in the Hermagor district are thus strongly shaped by different perspectives, and it remains to be seen how these different opinions are taken into account in future government formation processes. The path to stable and effective decisions will not be an easy challenge, as the mayors impressively explain.
