The world of bees: a look at the beekeeping in Carinthia
In Carinthia, beekeeping plays an important role, not only for nature, but also for the culture of the country. At the beginning of the bee year in March, the beekeepers are active again to check the health of their peoples and ensure that there are enough food reserves. These preparations are crucial to prepare the bees for the upcoming flowering period.
The Krainer bee, or also called Carinthian bee, is one of the meek and hardworking bees breeds. Her breeding goes back to the time of Empress Maria Theresia, who made sure that every farmer held at least three bee colonies. Their goal was to develop a bee that is suitable for the native conditions in the Alpine Adria room. This tradition is continued to this day, and beekeeping in Carinthia with over 3,000 active beekeepers and beekeepers has a permanent place.
The importance of beekeeping
beekeepers have an indispensable task: they ensure the pollination of plants, which is essential for the cultivation of fruit, vegetables and other cultures. A special event, the Austrian honey festival, takes place annually in Hermagor, where the diversity and quality of the domestic honey are celebrated.
The work of the beekeepers is not only limited to honey production. Youth promotion is an essential aspect. The beekeepers rely on a playful introduction of children to beekeeping. Young people are offered the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of international competitions, which ensures the future of beekeeping and promotes interest in this craft.
The documentary "through the bee year", which is produced by Arnulf Prasch, shows the challenges, but also the joy that beekeeping brings with it. On Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 6:25 p.m., this broadcast will be broadcast in ORF 2 and offers a deep insight into the life of beekeepers in Carinthia and the different facets of this important activity.
For more information about this exciting topic and to get to know the passion behind the beekeeping, it is worth taking a look at the upcoming program, which, among other things, goes into access to youth work in beekeeping and illustrates the importance of pollination. A repetition is planned for December 5, 2024 at 10.40 a.m.
