Handicrafts meet tradition: Freddy Prisslan and the Krampus

Freddy Prisslan, a passionate craftsman from Feldkirchen, has opened up a new life path with the production of Krampus masks. He found inspiration for his work in the traditional Krampus tradition, which was already fascinated by him in his childhood. At the time, his father made him the first mask, which triggered a deep curiosity and enthusiasm at Prisslan. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Krampus group Demoriel Pass Feldkirchen and has participated in various moves. This tradition is an important part of the pre -Christmas celebrations for many people in the region.

Prisslan, who originally worked as a stonemason, raised his hobby to art. "I started designing horns and masks from synthetic resin and painting them," explains the 35-year-old. His interest and the increased demand meant that he now supported Marco Jurak, who is also active in the Krampus and Perchten equipment. Your cooperation contributes to the preservation and spread of this old tradition, which is important for the region.

handicrafts and regional differences

The Krampus tradition is varied regionally and has many facets. Krampusse traditionally appear during Advent, while the Perchten, according to old traditions, are supposed to drive away the evil winter spirits. Prisslan emphasizes that this diversity is not only historical, but also culturally significant. In his workshop he works on new masks and costumes all year round. Especially in autumn, before the celebrations, the groups bring their equipment to the workshop to refresh them.

The craftsmen like Prisslan often have to develop new designs and be inspired by various sources. "I find inspiration in churches where you can see representations of witches and other beings," he says. If a motif appeals to him, he first creates a form that is then poured and finally painted. The creations can then be admired during the moves.

In addition, many masks are now renewed every year or every two years in order to make the presentation alive and appealing. The Krampuses are becoming increasingly important and contributing to the culture and identity of the region. Demoriel Pass will take part in a move to Feldkirchen on December 7, in which the freshly designed masks are presented.
