Carinthia under heat warning: How to protect yourself from the summer heat!
The current heat wave in Carinthia brings health risks for many residents. In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, the state already experienced the first tropical night, while the temperatures in Klagenfurt fell to worrying 20 degrees. Wednesday itself was the hottest day of the year with the afternoon of up to 35 degrees, even locally. In view of these extreme weather conditions, the warning level in the Carinthian heat protection plan was activated to protect the population.
such as gailtal-journal.at reported, around 900 facilities-including old people's and nursing homes, hospitals and childcare facilities-were informed about recommended immediate measures. Older people, children and chronically ill are particularly at risk. Health Councilor Beate Prettner emphasizes that tropical nights can stress the body and impair relaxation.
recommended measures against the heat
In the course of the new heat protection plan, which was presented in Villach at the 1st Carinthian Heat Protection Day in early June, special leaflets are available for various target groups. This includes infants, pet owners, caring relatives and medical staff. Prettner also passes on four important heat protection tips:
- drink a lot (water or unsweetened tea), even if there is no feeling.
- Avoid physical exertion, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- keep living rooms cool by ventilating in the morning and closed windows and darkened.
- Caution in medication that influence the heat regulation; If in doubt, medical advice should be obtained.
The rising temperatures have determined consequences throughout Europe, as well as kaernten.orf.at. The frequent heat waves in Germany have increased, and forecasts indicate that 2024 will be the warmest year since the beginning of the weather records. High temperatures put a lot of strain on the body, even healthy people do not remain untouched. However, older people, pregnant women and people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk.
The health consequences of heat can be serious and range from circulatory problems to heat collapse to sunsticks and heat shots. In addition, the heat can increase psychological problems such as sleep disorders, stress and aggressiveness, such as aok.de. In view of these risks, it is of the utmost importance to take protective measures and to take the warnings of the authorities seriously.
