Cold horror in Linz: homeless fights for survival!
Linz, Österreich - in Linz, the cold, especially the homeless people, as Christian Gaiseder, Managing Director of the B37 association, reports. It is estimated that between 50 and 60 people live permanently on the street. Although the emergency sleeping points attract more visitors in the winter months, there are many who avoid these facilities for various reasons. "We are very keen that nothing happens!" Said Gaiseder, who heads the street workers in Linz. These employees are active to help the homeless who do not want to or cannot visit the emergency accommodation. In acute cases, it is advisable to call the rescue because the cold protection hotline has only limited times (0732/77 67 67 560). The helpers try to offer thermal mats and warm clothes to ensure survival in the cold.
This winter season over 100 reports were registered on the refrigeration phone, with around 100 reports entering into every winter. Most of the homeless people are known to the helpers, but some reject help, as Gaiseder explains. "We can't force anyone." Typical locations for homeless are the bus terminal at the train station, the former Leiner building and hotspots on the Danube and on the Bindermichl. The situation is critical, but fortunately there has been no death due to frosties for years, which the helpers rate as a positive sign. "We have had no death from freezing for years," as the reports confirm.
The emergency sleeping points and the help provided should offer those affected an alternative, but many seem to be settled in their living conditions. It is up to all of us to be attentive and if necessary help when we see homeless people. As krone.at aptly formulated, the visibility of the homeless is only the tip of the iceberg. Many fight under the surface so as not to sink, and often the help is only a call away. The initiative of B37 and the street workers may appear small, but in these frosty times it is of crucial importance to alleviate at least part of the need.
The city of Linz therefore faces a challenge that requires far -reaching measures. In winter it is particularly important not to lose sight of these people and to actively respond to their needs, while the cold continues to lie down the city. The fate of the homeless should touch us all, and each contribution can be the key to a warmer living environment.
