Apply now to become a teacher in Vienna: Shape the future!

The main application phase for the teaching profession in Vienna begins on April 23, 2025. Between April 28th and May 9th, 2025, interested applicants have the opportunity to apply for teaching positions for the coming school year 2025/26. Education Director Elisabeth Fuchs and the Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education, Bettina Emmerling, are calling for people to become part of a committed education team that promotes high-quality education for children and young people in Vienna. This is done under the guiding principles of equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion in the city's schools. presse.wien.gv.at reports that teachers not only impart knowledge, but also shape the future of the students.

The advertisement is aimed at potential teachers who can submit their documents online via the application platform. This includes creating an application profile and sending certificates and evidence by email to the Education Directorate. The so-called main advertisement is supplemented by smaller follow-up advertisements, which offer potential applicants a second chance if the match is unsuccessful. bmb.gv.at points out that the most important requirements for teachers are organizational talent, enjoyment of working with young people and empathy. This is supplemented by the support of the school management and colleagues in training the new teachers.

Educational offerings and initiatives

In order to promote social integration and cohesion, Viennese schools can offer free class trips to help students develop social skills. Teachers play a central role here, not only in imparting knowledge, but also in organizing school events and promoting a positive communication culture.

A significant issue in the Austrian education system is the differences in performance between students with and without a migration background. Students with a migrant background are 58 points behind their peers without a migrant background in mathematics, 65 points in reading and 78 points in science, as schule.at reports. These significant differences have remained constant over the years and represent a challenge for teachers, especially in classes with a high proportion of immigrants.

The Ministry of Education points out that around half of students with a migrant background in Austria are socioeconomically disadvantaged, which can have a negative impact on learning performance. Nevertheless, there are also positive examples, such as in the case of Canada, where students with a migrant background are successfully integrated into the education system, which shows that a migrant background does not necessarily have to lead to poorer educational opportunities.
