Internet hunt: Styrian Artur fights for false information!

Graz, Österreich - On June 11, 2025, a tragic killing spree occurred at a high school in Graz. This incident not only triggered fear and shock, but also focused on the dangers of digital violence. A man from Southwest Styria, called Artur, became the goal of massive hate messages and threats due to his equality of names and the same initials as the perpetrator. Since Tuesday evening he has been flooded with a storm of attack -oriented messages that even find it internationally, including in France.

friends and acquaintances of Artur believe that he is the perpetrator, which makes the situation escalate. Artur describes disgusting news and even threats to murder that are aimed at him, which made him and his family forced to spend the night from Tuesday to Wednesday for security reasons. According to his own statements, he is very afraid of possible vigilante justice, which illustrates the drastic effects of the false information on the Internet.

The role of digital violence

Janina Steinert, professor for Global Health at the Technical University of Munich, emphasizes the far -reaching consequences of such attacks in a study of digital violence. In her research, she shows that almost every second politically committed person who is affected by digital violence had to adapt their communication. This means that content is changed and platforms are less often visited. Almost every fourth affected woman even considered to withdraw completely. These alarming numbers illustrate how very digital attacks endanger democratic coexistence, like Yvonne Magwas, CDU member of the Bundestag.

The demand for quick action is supported by Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, managing director of Hateaid. It calls on to set up contact points for those affected within the parties and to consistently pursue ads. At the same time, it is required that operators of social media platforms are more tied to the digital services Act (DSA) in order to actively act against hate comments and false information.

Technological dimension of digital violence

Another phenomenon that contributes to digital violence are Face Swap Apps. They enable users to create image and video material that has a realistic effect, but has not been recorded. Users can assemble faces of social media on images of foreign bodies, often in a sexualized and not mutual way. This happens against the background that the majority of such manipulations against women are directed and often occurs in the form of non-inconsistent pornography. Studies show that around 90 to 95% of all Deepfakes represent this extremely problematic category.

Without effective protective measures by app operators and politics, fears that manipulated content will continue to be spread unhindered. The case of Artur urgently illustrates the far -reaching consequences of digital violence and false information - a problem that is also becoming increasingly important in the broader social debate about the protection of individuals against such threats.

Artur has now contacted the police, but can only wait for their further steps while the digital hunt lasts against him. His case impressively shows how quickly false information spreads on the Internet and what dramatic effects you can have on uninvolved. The football club, which Artur belongs, has already reacted and organized legal support in order to assist it in this difficult time.

The relevance of these topics is more passed when it may appear at first glance. The public discussion about hate on the net and the responsibility of platforms is increasingly gaining urgency to prevent such incidents in the future.
