Historical wine cellar: Lower Austria gives the first building culture awards for the first time!

Maissau, Österreich - On April 28, 2025, the state of Lower Austria awarded the award "I am Lower Austria Building Culture" for the first time. This special award aims to honor the successful renovations of historical press houses and to pay recognition to the people who actively work for the preservation of the cultural heritage. In a solemn ceremony in the Meierhof Ulrichskirchen, a total of 24 projects received the coveted badge.

The special prize of the jury, which went to Lukas Bayer from Maissau, was particularly emphasized. His award -winning press house fulfills a double function as a press house and grain box and is characterized by a faithful preservation. The roof was only slightly exceeded, while historical roof tiles were used. Windows and doors have been repaired and the facade is given an authentic character due to a white liming.

discussion about cellar alleys and renovation recommendations

The awarding of the prices was also the reason for a comprehensive discussion about the value of the cellar alleys. Experts from the areas of building culture, cellar allocation and art and culture came together to talk about the importance of these historical structures. As part of this discussion, recommendations for professional renovations were also shared. The recommended measures include the use of traditional materials, such as wood for doors and windows as well as clay bricks for roofs, and minimizing

The state of Lower Austria supports renovation projects financially and offers comprehensive information in the "Handbuch Kellergasse". Future initiatives by 2025 include a series of poster on the subject of “Building Culture Lower Austria” and its own website that will provide further information on these important projects.

The context of monument protection

In the further context, monument protection is also of great importance in Germany. According to the Baukulturerbe Foundation , about 3.5 % of the buildings are entered as monuments. There are also many particularly well -preserved buildings that are considered valuable due to their age or special design but are not listed. These make up an estimated 25-35 % of the total building stock.

With regard to the climate policy goals, which until 2050 provide for an almost complete climate neutrality of the building stock in Germany, energetic renovations must take into account both the requirements of monument protection and the needs of the owners. It should be noted that some renovation methods are restricted in listed buildings, such as external insulation.

DIDITICTION COMPLETION OF THE DEPARITION AND RENABRENT must preserve the specific features of every old building and avoid damage such as moisture or mold formation. This can create a balance between monument protection and climate protection by renovating buildings worth preserving.
