Thunderstorm chaos in Upper Austria: 330 fire brigade missions in one night!

On Thursday, July 4, 2025, numerous communities in Upper Austria were affected by violent thunderstorms and heavy rain. In the districts of Steyr-Land, Linz-Land and Urfahr area, the fire brigade's emergency services had to master around 330 missions, a number that increase until late in the evening. The affected communities included Dietach, Traun, Engerwitzdorf and Gallneukirchen, where numerous cellars and underground garages were flooded.

The weather events started in Linz at 6:54 p.m. and led to a variety of challenges for the fire brigade. Around 40 emergency services from the Linz professional fire brigade and 60 firefighters from four volunteer fire departments were on site with 14 and 12 vehicles. At 11:06 p.m., 201 missions were completed, while 76 were still open. One of the special challenges included a fire in a wooden hut, triggered by a lightning strike.

damage and other missions

According to Nachrichten.at and Fireworld, many basements were flooded up to one meter high. The volunteer fire brigades were active at over 30 deployments, especially in the municipalities of Oberwang and Unterach in the Vöcklabruck district as well as in Gallneukirchen and Engerwitzdorf. A section of the street on the L217 was blocked due to a degenerate. Fortunately, there was no vehicle on the street at the time of the degree.

In addition, a flood alarm was triggered due to the water level in the large Gusen, but quickly removed again. These events show how strongly the weather was causing symptoms. Alexander Neuhauser, the section fire brigade commander, described the situation as extraordinary due to the regional limitation and the massive amounts of rain.

climate change and flood risk

These extreme weather situations are in the context of a global climate change, which is seen as a possible factor for the increase in flood events. According to information from Statista, floods have caused almost 37 percent of all natural disasters worldwide since 2000. This is explained by a warmer atmosphere that can store more water, which leads to more frequent and more intensive rainfall.

In Germany, about 7.6 percent of all addresses are exposed to statistical flood risk. The construction of infrastructure in risky zones is often carried out despite the endangered areas, without realistic alternatives or clear political guidelines to control such developments.

The latest events in Upper Austria illustrate the vulnerability of communities compared to extreme weather conditions. Therefore, a consistent expansion of flood protection and the consideration of natural retention rooms is crucial to minimize future damage and to ensure the safety of the affected regions.
