Spring awakening: storks end up in Marchegg - a sign of hope!
Spring seems to be around the corner, because the first white stork of the year has ended up in Marchegg, as the WWF reports. And that surprisingly a day earlier than in the previous year! The company from storks into the winter quarters has become noticeably earlier in recent years, which is probably due to the mild winter. Many more storks are expected in the coming weeks, and the breeding season traditionally begins in April. Despite the currently dry weather, the animals in the area find good living conditions, according to the reports of the WWF.
The WWF also draws a gratifying balance for the 2024 stork season: a total of 54 breeding pairs were counted - as many as since 1999! With 130 copies, the number of young birds has also been the highest in almost three decades. This positive development is not accidental, because the moist meadows that were created by a wet winter and spring in the previous year have created optimal conditions for the storks. The feed offer, supported by the grazing with half -winds conical horses, ensures that the storks find many insects - a real stroke of luck for their survival and a high success rate in the rearing of their chicks.
Storks and their habitats
Due to the excellent conditions, many young birds were able to successfully breed from previous years, which continues to stabilize the population. Jurrien Westerhof from the WWF was optimistic about the development: "The good food situation makes it easier for the storks to find food and lead to a relatively high breeding success." This shows how important the preservation of habitats for these impressive birds is important. The future of storks looks promising and it remains exciting how the numbers will develop over the next few weeks, as the WWF recognizes.
