Fico demands radical reforms: demos and criticism of European democracy!
The Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has caused a stir again by praising the economic "efficiency" of authoritarian states. During a recent visiting in Uzbekistan, he expressed his criticism of the European electoral system and called on reforms to increase the competitiveness of European democracies. Fico, who has been head of the Slovakia for the fourth time since his election in autumn 2023, cited countries such as Uzbekistan, China and Vietnam as examples of economically more successful systems.
He emphasized that these states were able to react faster to economic challenges due to their determined government. "If you have a hundred political parties, you cannot compete," said Fico, which underlines his concern to reduce the number of parties involved in decision -making processes. When asked whether this did not question democracy, he put his statements into perspective and claimed that he was not concerned with the abolition of the democratic principles, but rather about inspiration from other systems.
criticism and protests
fico's views are not without controversy that brought him sharp criticism and mass demonstrations. Many critics accuse him of authoritarian tendencies and a pro -Russian foreign policy. This is also a result of his support for Russia, including his negative attitude towards sanctions and the stop of the military aid for Ukraine. "The result of democratic elections is threatened by pressure from the street," says Fico, who rejects the pressure of the liberal opposition.
The mood in the country is tense because many citizens are demanding a stronger connection between Slovakia to the EU and NATO. Fico, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly independent in his political decisions and pursues a Russian-friendly foreign policy, which is also evident in his rejection of a planned EU import ban for Russian natural gas. He also plans to continue to obtain nuclear fuel elements from Russia in order to secure the operation of Slovak nuclear power plants.
economic successes in Uzbekistan
Another point of Fico's argument is Uzbekistan's economic growth, which recorded considerable growth in 2023 with 6.3 percent. These successes are attributed to reforms and modernizations under President Mirziyoyev. Fico's statements not only raise questions about his political direction, but also about the future role of Slovakia within Europe in view of global geopolitical developments.
In a Europe that is increasingly characterized by political and economic crises, Fico demands that a rethink is necessary to remain competitive. It remains to be seen whether he will be heard with his suggestions or whether the concerns about his authoritarian tendencies.
