The role of social democracy
In a larger context, the role of social democracy in society is historically and socially shaped. As the [bpb] (https://www.bpb.de/shop/zeitschratzen/apuz/166642/Social Democracy Democracy and-Menschenbild/), the SPD has retained its basic values of freedom, justice and solidarity since its foundation in 1890, despite the many challenges and setbacks that it had to do over the years. These basic values are still essential to deal with current social challenges such as populist-authoritarian demands and racism.
The strategies that the SPD derives from its 150-year history help to anchor the values and principles in current political discourses. In particular, the emphasis on the need for institutions to support human reason potential shows that social democracy keeps up its principles even in times of change and is committed to a just society.
