EU wants to withdraw law against Greenwashing - consumers in danger!

In the European Union, the focus is on a controversial legislative proposal, which aims to better protect consumers from misleading environmental advertising statements. The EU Commission has announced that it will discuss a desired withdrawal of the law against Greenwashing in the current round of negotiations that is planned for Monday. This is reported by the Environmental Federal Office .

The new requirements contain stricter regulations for reliable, comparable and verifiable information on environmental properties of products. Textal statements on environmental characteristics must be clear and justified; Unanimous environmental claims such as "environmentally friendly" or "sustainable" should be banned. In addition, certain climaticlaims are inadmissible, and non-state seals without third-party certification will no longer be accepted in the future.

goal of the consumer information

In order to increase the credibility of sustainability seals, new requirements for public relations and certification procedures have been determined. Wrong statements about durability and repair are also inadmissible. Consumers should not be prompted for premature replacement purchases, and information about the negative effects of software updates must be presented transparently. This ensures that consumers can rely on their purchase decisions on sound information.

With these regulations, the over 200 existing environmental labels in Europe, which are often incomparable, are to be made clearer and more comprehensible. The Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke welcomed the decision and emphasized the need to better protect consumers. The law must now be approved by the member states, and the implementation in national law will take place within two years, as reported by the Tagesschau
