EU criticism: Vilimsky demands stops of payments to Islamist NGOs!
In a strongly critical statement, Harald Vilimsky, Head of Delegation of the FPÖ in the European Parliament, attacked the EU for its financial support for organizations with connections to the Muslim Brotherhood. In his appeal, he calls for an immediate end of all payments to these groups, in particular to the organization Islamic Relief, which, according to Vilimsky, is observed in various countries because of its proximity to the radical Islamic movement. This information has publishedVilimsky describes the situation as irresponsible and scandalous, since the organization drives political agendas under the pretext of humanitarian aid. It is known that Islamic Relief also supports other NGOs that are active against the EU's foreign limit policy, such as SOS Humanity, which is committed to European asylum and border policy in Brussels.
EU financing under the magnifying glass
In a written request, MEPs Monika Hohlmeier and Sabine Verheyen pointed out the EU Commission to the problematic financing of Islamic Relief Germany. The organization, which was banned in 2014 by the Israeli authorities due to their connections to Hamas, receives 58,640 euros for a project via the Erasmus+ program. Hohlmeier and Verheyen wonder how an organization that has close personnel connections to the Muslim Brotherhood could be selected as a partner for inclusion and equality. This request was submitted on December 18, 2023 and knowledgeable by Europarl.eu documented.
The German government has repeatedly pointed out the problematic connections of Islamic Relief Germany and has already classified the organization as terroristically in 2014. This raises questions about the responsibility of the EU, especially in view of the fact that from 2021 to 2023 over seven billion euros flowed to NGOs in various areas, but without sufficient controls.
transparency and responsibility required
A report by the European Court of Auditors from 2022 criticized the insufficient transparency about the funds that flow to NGOs. According to tagesschau.de there were ambiguities about the sums and their purpose. Laima Andrikienė, a member of the European Court of Auditors, expressed that EU financing is not sufficiently checked for such organizations to ensure that they respect the values of the EU.
In the European Parliament, there is also a persistent dispute over the allocation of NGO funds, whereby the EPP parliamentary group in particular questions the award to criticized NGOs. Monika Hohlmeier reported analyzes that indicate problematic practices within the NGO contracts. There are stressful indications that some organizations have received financial resources for lobbying.
The debate has the potential to change the EU's answers to such critical questions and could have far -reaching effects on future financing policy and the role of NGOs in the EU
