Poignant stories of escape and loss: exhibition in St. Pölten
Yesterday the opening of a special exhibition took place in the country house in St. Pölten, which was brought to life by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. Under the title “Torn from Life” the personal stories of 16 Jews who had to flee Austria between 1938 and 1945 are presented. Prominent guests, including Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and Yad Vashem Director Haim Gertner, celebrated the start of this moving project, which illustrates the fate of those people after the annexation of Austria NÖN.at reported.
The exhibition tells stories of refugees who had to leave their homeland under dramatic circumstances. These include characters like Margit, who left her kimono and a comprehensive “illustrated cookbook” behind in China, or Rosa, who traveled to America on a ship with a pocket knife. Each of these stories sheds light on individual suffering and memorable fates, characterized by loss and new beginnings in foreign countries NOE.N.at held on. This impressive show is not only a remembrance of the past, but also a call not to forget the stories of those persecuted.
The opening of this exhibition is an important cultural event in Lower Austria that brings history to life and encourages reflection on the past. It is a powerful reminder of the flight and expulsion that many Jewish families experienced and shows that history always has a human dimension.
