Elisabeth Schwetz elected to the public prosecutor: New leadership change in the public prosecutor

Elisabeth Schwetz will be the new prosecutor in Austria. With the votes from FPÖ, ÖVP, SPÖ and the Greens, the National Council Elisabeth Schwetz chose the public prosecutor. She succeeds the former Volksanwalt Walter Rosenkranz. Together with the two incumbent members of the People's Prosecutor's Office, Gaby Schwarz and Bernhard Achitz, she will exercise this office until June 30, 2025.

The public lawyers are elected by the National Council for six years, whereby the most mandate -strong parties have the right to propose for a member. Schwetz was nominated by the freedom and received broad support from FPÖ, ÖVP, SPÖ and the Greens. The election was criticized by Neos and the Greens because they described the selection process as "non -transparent". The FPÖ, on the other hand, defended the democratic process and emphasized that Schwetz was ideal.

The importance of the public prosecutor for the trust of citizens in public administration and the prevention of human rights violations was also emphasized by the ÖVP and SPÖ.

This decision is important because the public prosecutor plays an important role in the discovery of grievances in the administration and serves as a point of contact for citizens that have problems with authorities. As the new prosecutor, Elisabeth Schwetz will help strengthen confidence in public administration and to protect the rights of citizens.

Further information on the election of Elisabeth Schwetz as an elementary lawyer can be found on the website of the Austrian Parliament.
